Progress Road upgrade stage two at Wacol is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program –an unprecedented infrastructure investment that fast tracks 15 years of road works into just four years. The program delivers traffic congestion reduction, increased safety and improved access across Brisbane’s road network.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Project features
Progress Road upgrade stage two will widen Progress Road from two to four lanes between the Ipswich Motorway and Boundary Road at Wacol. Key features of the project include:
- installing traffic lights at the Progress Road/Production Street/Industrial Avenue intersection
- upgrading the Progress Road/Boundary Road intersection and to provide additional traffic capacity
- constructing a raised centre median on Progress Road
- providing continuous pedestrians footpath on both sides of Progress Road
- installing cycle lanes at the Boundary Road and Production Street/Industrial Avenue intersections.
Other stages
This upgrade follows on from stage one of the Progress Road upgrade, which involved constructing a new four-lane median divided road between Poinsettia Street and Garden Road in Inala. Planning for stage three, between Boundary Road and Garden Road is continuing with funding for detailed design allocated in Council’s 2012/13 budget.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- Reduced traffic congestion and improved travel times from more traffic lanes
- Improved intersection efficiency
- Increased safety from a raised centre median to separate opposing traffic flows
- New footpaths and pedestrian crossing signals at intersections to improve pedestrian safety.
IMPACTS DURING CONSTRUCTION
Construction on Progress Road upgrade stage two is planned to start in mid-June 2010 and will take approximately 12 months to complete, weather permitting.
To provide the necessary space to widen the road, roadside parking along Progress Road will be removed once construction starts. Parking will still be permitted in adjoining streets.
Other impacts during construction include:
- possible short delays
- speed limit reduced to 40km/h through work site
- Progress Road and Boundary Road intersection will be closed over one weekend – dates to be advised
- general construction noise
- temporary lane closures from time to time – please follow the direction of traffic controllers.
Two-way access on Progress Road will be maintained for most of the works however some temporary lane closures and diversions will be required. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank motorists and local residents for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the safety and efficiency of this busy intersection.

Council is committed to keeping the community and local residents and businesses informed of construction activity in their area. Throughout construction, fortnightly updates will be available on this website as well as emailed to interested stakeholders.
