Council has commenced planning for an upgrade to Sumners Road, between Dandenong Road and Wacol Station Road at Sumner/Jamboree Heights.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The aim of the Sumners Road upgrade is to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety – particularly on sections where the majority of collisions occur – and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The upgrade is likely to be completed in two phases:
· phase one: upgrade Sumners Road/Dandenong Road intersection
· phase two: widen Sumners Road to four lanes, between Dandenong and Wacol Station roads.
A draft plan has been developed for phase one and we are now seeking community feedback on this plan. Feedback on draft plans for phase two will be sought later this year.
Proposed upgrade features (phase one)
The Sumners Road/Dandenong Road intersection upgrade is proposed to involve:
· removing the roundabout and installing traffic lights
· widening the intersection to provide four lanes on Dandenong Road, five lanes on the western Sumners Road approach and six lanes on the eastern Sumners Road approach
· straightening the Sumners Road approaches to the intersection
· installing dedicated right-turn lanes
· installing on-road bicycle lanes on Sumners Road.
