Robinson Road Open Level Crossing Replacement

The open level crossing on Newman Road at Geebung causes significant peak time traffic congestion.  To ease this congestion and improve road user safety, Brisbane City Council is planning to separate this rail crossing from the through road network.

Project background
A shortlist of three options for separating the rail line from the road network was produced and distributed to the local community for comment in November 2007.

Feedback on these options was invited via a reply-paid feedback form in the project newsletter, public displays at the Geebung RSL and phone and email.

Feedback received showed a community preference for design option two (68% of people who chose one of the shortlisted options selected this design). After a period of technical investigations, Council has now adopted this design option as the approved road scheme.

The selected design
Design option two was found to:

  • be most preferred by the local community
  • have better traffic efficiency benefits than the other options
  • require the lowest total number of land acquisitions.

The design involves:

  • building an overpass over the rail line to join Robinson Road East and Robinson Road West
  • extending Railway Parade along the rail line to meet the overpass on its northern side at a new intersection at Bassano Street
  • installing traffic signals at either end of the overpass (Newman Road and Bassano Street)
  • closing the open level crossing after the project is finished.

To construct the project, Council will need to acquire 28 privately-owned properties.  A further 10 properties will be subject to a partial land requirement.  Letters have recently been sent to the owners of these properties to confirm these requirements.

Where to from here?
Before construction can start, Council must reach an agreement on funding with other levels of government.  These negotiations are currently underway.

Council has already commenced detailed design and undertaken community consultation on the project.

Subject to securing suitable levels of funding from other levels of government construction is scheduled to start in 2011.

Council is committed to keeping the local community informed of this project and will provide regular updates as the project progresses.
