Gap Creek Road upgrade

The Gap Creek Road upgrade at The Gap and Kenmore Hills is part of the Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program - an unprecedented infrastructure investment that fast tracks 15 years of road works into just four years. The program delivers traffic congestion reduction, increased safety and improved access across Brisbane’s road network.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Address Gap Creek Road, Highwood Road and Dillon Road between The Gap and Kenmore Hills
Ward The Gap and Pullenvale
Project objective This upgrade will ensure the road continues to meet the safety standards for the increasing volume of traffic using the road.

Latest update

Major construction of the upgrade project is now complete. Gap Creek Road re-opened under traffic control on Saturday, 24 July 2010.

Traffic control will remain in place until final minor construction works have been completed. This includes the installation of guardrails and safety fences, finalising car park works and landscaping.

The project team thanks motorists and local residents for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the safety and efficiency of the road network.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Brisbane City Council has completed the upgrade of Gap Creek Road between The Gap and Kenmore Hills and improvements to Kookaburra Street, Highwood Road and Dillon Road.

Gap Creek Road was upgraded to ensure it continues to meet the safety standards for the increasing volume of traffic using the road.

Following a comprehensive feasibility study and community consultation, construction of Gap Creek Road upgrade began in late 2009 and was completed in two stages.

Stage One
This included sealing the gravel road through Mt Coot-tha Forest Park and upgrading the intersection at Kookaburra Street and Gap Creek Road. It also involved:

  • widening the single-lane bridge near Gap Creek Reserve to two lanes
  • signposting the road to 50km/hour
  • realigning sharp bends and removing earth from steep crests along the road.

As a result of community consultation, the design also included:

  • speed platforms and slow points to maintain traffic speeds and protect fauna
  • roundabouts at the two Highwood Road intersections to provide safe access and to act as a traffic slowing device
  • modifications to the Kookaburra Street intersection
  • three under-road culvert fauna crossings
  • entry statements identifying the environmental significance of the area and the need to drive with care
  • five-tonne load limit to restrict heavy vehicles using the road.

Stage Two
Stage Two, including Gap Creek Road between Brookfield Road and Mt Coot-tha Forest, and Dillon Road between Payne Road and Highwood Road, involved minor safety improvements.

Stage two involved:

  • widening the four existing culvert crossings
  • localised road widening to improve safety
  • providing a 1.2 metre wide pedestrian pathway on the eastern side of Gap Creek Road between Kookaburra Street and Brookfield Road
  • installing a slow down speed device north of Kookaburra Street, before the right hand turn, to slow traffic and improve safety
  • sealing the Gap Creek Reserve car park
  • replacing existing and installing new guardrails, where necessary
  • signposting the road to 50km/hour
  • revegetating areas disturbed by construction.
