Manly West traffic improvement projects

The Manly West traffic improvements project at Manly is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program - an unprecedented infrastructure investment that fast tracks 15 years of road works into just four years. The program delivers traffic congestion reduction, increased safety and improved access across Brisbane’s road network.

Current projects in the Manly West traffic improvements area include:
Tilley Road extension
Manly Road upgrade

PROJECT SUMMARY
Address

Tilley Road extension stage 1B: Wondall Road, between Radford Road and Millennium Place, Hargreaves Road.
Manly Road upgrade: Manly Road, between Wondall Road roundabout and Arenga Street.

Ward Doboy ward
Project outcome The project will reduce traffic congestion and improve the safety for all road users in the Wynnum Manly area.
Latest traffic update

Tilley Road extension: Congestion is likely on Hargreaves Road in front of Moreton Bay College during school pick-up and drop-off times.

Manly Road upgrade: Traffic changes occurred in late January to Manly Road, between the Wondall Road roundabout and Arenga Street. The changes included redirecting traffic onto the newly upgraded traffic lanes on the southern side of Manly Road. Motorists travelling inbound will no longer be able to turn right into Lockwood Crescent from Manly Road. To access Lockwood Crescent, motorists will have to proceed along Manly Road to the Wondall Road roundabout and turn around to enter Lockwood Crescent via a left turn.

ABOUT THESE PROJECTS
In mid 2007, Brisbane City Council commenced planning and design work on four road improvement projects in the Manly West area. These projects formed the Manly West traffic improvements project.

Tilley Road extension, stage one. Tilley Road extension is a five stage project which will ultimately see the Port of Brisbane Motorway linked to Old Cleveland Road through a single direct north-south connection. The connection between Manly and Wondall Roads was identified as the first logical stage of this project.

The first stage is divided into two stages:

  • Stage 1A - Completed November 2009, involved upgrading Manly Road/Hargreaves Road intersection.
  • Stage 1B - Currently under construction, will involve constructing a new arterial road between Manly and Wondall Roads, using the existing section of Hargreaves Road that connects to Manly Road.

Manly Road upgrade. The area between Manly and Wondall Roads has a large number of community facilities which generate a high volume of traffic. The entry/exit to Lockwood Crescent on top of a crest creates significant visibility issues and has been the subject of safety concerns for many years.

The upgrade of Manly Road involves installing traffic signals at the Manly and Wondall Roads intersection, widening the road to four lanes between Wondall Road and Arenga Street and changing access to Lockwood Crescent.

Since 2007, Council have been actively engaged with the Manly West community regarding these projects. We have achieved this through extensive consultation on road design, providing regular newsletter updates, a dedicated project information line and notifying local residents in advance of construction works and traffic changes.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Tilley Road extension will:

  • provide a continuous link between Port of Brisbane and Old Cleveland Road
  • relieve traffic congestion, increase connectivity and improve road safety in Manly West
  • connect Wondall and Manly Roads.

Manly Road upgrade will:

  • improve traffic congestion at the Wondall Road and Manly Road intersection
  • provide greater safety for cyclists and pedestrians by installing dedicated bicycle lanes and widened footpaths
  • improve safety and access for Bay Wood Estate residents.

IMPACTS TO MOTORISTS AND LOCAL RESIDENTS DURING CONSTRUCTION

  • Major lane closures will be undertaken outside of peak traffic times, however some delays may still be experienced during peak periods.
  • Congestion on Hargreaves Road in front of Moreton Bay College during school drop off and pick up times.
  • Congestion on roads leading to Wondall Road roundabout during peak hour traffic periods.
  • Some night works may be required to minimise traffic delays and reduce construction timeframes.
  • Local residents will be provided with advance notification of these works.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank motorists and local residents for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the safety and efficiency of this busy intersection.
