Brisbane City Council and Department of Main Roads are pleased to announce that construction to upgrade Old Northern Road and Hamilton Road intersection at McDowall is now complete. Construction commenced in early July 2008 and was completed in late October 2008.
Background
During community consultation undertaken in 2005 as part of Hamilton Road upgrade project, the following concerns were raised about the intersection of Old Northern Road and Hamilton Road:
- safety at the intersection
- traffic delays when exiting Hamilton Road onto Old Northern Road
- right-turn access from both Hamilton Road and Old Northern Road.
The community noted they would like to have signals at this intersection and a dedicated left-turn slip-lane from Hamilton Road onto Old Northern Road.
Traffic signals were considered to provide the greatest improvement to safety and accessibility for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
Project features
The intersection upgrade included:
- installing new traffic signals
- providing two right-turn lanes from Hamilton Road onto Old Northern Road
- constructing a left-turn slip-lane from Hamilton Road onto Old Northern Road
- constructing an additional right-turn lane from Old Northern Road into Hamilton Road
- providing signalised pedestrian crossings at Hamilton Road and Old Northern Road
- providing a bicycle stand-up lane from Hamilton Road onto Old Northern Road
- upgrading the existing inbound bus stop along Old Northern Road to improve access and usability
- co-ordinating the new signals with the existing signals at the Old Northern Road and Collins Road intersection to improve overall traffic flow through the area.
