Meadowlands Road/Preston Road/Baynes Street intersection upgrade

Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce that the upgrade to Meadowlands Road/Preston Road/Baynes Street intersection at Carina/Carindale is now complete. The upgrade is part of Council's Road Action Program, which tackles Brisbane's 21 worst congested road.

Background
The project commenced in September 2008 and was completed within schedule in April 2009. This was the second major Meadowlands Road intersection to be upgraded, with the Meadowlands Road/Wright Street intersection upgraded in 2008.

Now that it’s complete this important upgrade will:

  • increase the intersection's traffic handling capacity
  • reduce traffic congestion on Meadowlands Road
  • improve turning access
  • improve traffic safety
  • improve safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians

Project features
The upgrade involved:

  • widening Meadowlands Road from one lane to two lanes in each direction
  • realigning Preston Road and Baynes Street to form a cross roads intersection, instead of a staggered intersection
  • installing traffic signals
  • installing centre medians to separate traffic on Meadowlands Road
  • installing right-turn pockets into both side roads from Meadowlands Road
  • installing left-turn slip-lanes from both side roads into Meadowlands Road
  • providing signalised pedestrian crossings on all but the west leg of Meadowlands Road
  • installing kerbside bicycle stand up lanes on all approaches.
