Hamilton Road upgrade project

Brisbane City Council has completed an upgrade to Hamilton Road between Paramount Circuit and Whites Road at McDowall as part of its Road Action Program, which tackles Brisbane's 21 worst congested roads.

Project details
The Hamilton Road Upgrade Project has completed the east-west corridor between McDowall and Chermside. It provides an alternative route to other nearby east-west corridors, improving travel conditions in and around the local area.

The project has involved:

  • constructing a two-lane roadway, one lane in each direction, from Paramount Circuit to Whites Road at McDowall
  • constructing retaining walls, where required, to a four-lane width to allow for possible future upgrade requirements
  • realigning and regrading the Milne Hill section of Hamilton Road to meet relevant safetyand AustRoads standards
  • constructing a new bridge over Little Cabbage Tree Creek
  • installing traffic signals at the Whites Road, Narthanya Street and Hamilton Road intersection
  • upgrading the Paramount Circuit and Hamilton Road intersection to allow for the provision of future traffic signals and a dedicated right turn lane
    upgrading the Trouts Road and Hamilton Road intersection to allow for the provision of future traffic signals
  • dedicated turning lanes into the Milne Hill playing fields and the reservoir
  • on-road bicycle lanes in both directions
  • a fauna underpass between the Trouts Road bushland area and the Chermside Hills reserve and a fauna land bridge between Raven Street reserve and Milne Hill
  • fauna fencing between the bushland and roadway so animals can safely cross the road only at the fauna underpass and bridge

Additional works
The following additional works were completed after Hamilton Road upgrade:

  • installation of fauna fencing on Beckett Road as part of Council’s Wildlife Movement Solutions Program
  • installation of traffic signals at Hamilton Road/Trouts Road and Hamilton Road/Paramount Circuit to improve safety and access for motorists and pedestrians.

Timing
Construction of the upgrade commenced in November 2006 and was completed on 14 June 2008. The additional works were completed in June 2009.
