Wynnum Road widening - Stanton Road to Thornlake Court

Brisbane City Council commenced construcion of the Wynnum Road widening – Stanton Road to Thornlake Court project in mid-June 2009. Construction is expected to be completed mid 2010, weather permitting.

This project is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program, which tackles congestion and improves safety on Brisbane’s 21 worst congested roads.

Background
Wynnum Road currently operates as three lanes inbound and two lanes outbound between the Gateway Motorway and Kianawah Park at Tingalpa. The road caters for a large volume of peak time commuter traffic, providing the main link between bayside suburbs and the city, as well as the north and south coasts via the Gateway Motorway.

The upgrade to Wynnum Road at the Gateway Motorway overpass was completed in 2007. The Stanton Road to Thornlake Court widening project will ensure the benefits gained through this project are not lost to congestion on Wynnum Road through Tingalpa.

Upgrade features
The upgrade will involve:

  • widening Wynnum Road to six lanes (three lanes in each direction) between Stanton Road and Thornlake Court
  • provision of dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of the road servicing the existing schools, commercial and residential precincts
  • provision of an east – west cycle link
  • removing kerbside parking
  • installing indented bus bays at selected locations
  • improving existing right turn and u-turn facilities
  • improving centre medians
  • improving footpaths
  • planting street trees and other vegetation as appropriate.

Project timeframe
Construction started mid-June 2009 and is expected to be completed mid-2010, weather permitting.

Work hours
Standard work hours will be between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and some out of hours work will be required. Advance notification of out of hours work will be provided to affected properties.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to motorists during this work and peak time lane closures will be kept to a minimum.
