Construction update
Brisbane City Council began construction of the Kingsford Smith Drive – Harvey Street to Theodore Street upgrade project in January 2010. Construction is expected to be complete in early 2011, weather permitting.
Construction mostly occurs between 7:00am and 5:00pm from Monday to Saturday. Night work between 9:00pm and 5:00am and work on Sunday is also necessary for some activities.
From 5:00am to 9:00pm Monday to Saturday, two lanes in both directions are kept open to traffic. When traffic needs to be reduced to a single lane each way it is done outside these hours.
The speed limit through the work area has been reduced to 40km/h and traffic control is onsite to assist motorists as necessary. Motorists should expect some minor delays when traveling through the area.
Safe pedestrian and cyclist access through the worksites has been maintained at all times.
Centre median
To upgrade Kingsford Smith Drive from Harvey Street to Theodore Street from four lanes to six, a number of trees and all centre-median car parking spaces and median breaks have been removed. During construction a similar number of trees removed will be replaced within the road corridor.
Bus stop relocations
As part of the upgrade, two bus stops along this section of Kingsford Smith Drive will be relocated and four will be removed. The removal and relocation of these stops was requested by Brisbane Transport and TransLink to improve the bus operations through this section of Kingsford Smith Drive.

Background
This project is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program, which tackles congestion and improves safety on Brisbane’s 21 worst congested roads. The Road Action Program is an unprecedented infrastructure investment that fast tracks 15 years of road works into just four years. The program delivers traffic congestion reduction, increased safety and improved access across Brisbane’s road network.
The Kingsford Smith Drive – Harvey Street to Theodore Street upgrade project will provide enhanced traffic infrastructure to service the area’s growing needs. It will improve traffic flow, capacity at intersections, road user safety and pedestrian and cyclist access.
The project will complement works associated with the Gateway upgrade project, which includes connection of an on and off-ramp to Kingsford Smith Drive.
Project details
The Kingsford Smith Drive – Harvey Street to Theodore Street upgrade project includes:
Additional lanes
1. Widening Kingsford Smith Drive from four lanes to six lanes between Theodore Street and Harvey Street, requiring the removal of centre median car parking spaces.
Cycling and pedestrian access
2. Providing on-road cycling and continuous pedestrian footpaths, on both sides of the road.
Theodore Street to Fison Avenue centre median closure
3. Closure of the existing median break between Theodore Street and Fison Avenue to maximise traffic flow and improve safety.
Installing traffic signals
4. Signalising the left-turn lanes from Fison Avenue onto Kingsford Smith Drive.
5. Allowing right turns from both northbound lanes on Fison Avenue to head east on Kingsford Smith Drive.
6. Duplicating the left-turn lane from Links Avenue onto Kingsford Smith Drive and signalising the two left-turn lanes.
Duplicating and extending queuing lanes
7. Adding a second right-turn lane from Kingsford Smith Drive to the Gateway Motorway northbound on-ramp and lengthening both right-turn queuing lanes.
8. Adding a second right-turn lane from Kingsford Smith Drive into Schneider Road and lengthening both right-turn queuing lanes.
Violet Street and Schneider Road to Harvey Street centre median closures
9. Converting Violet Street/Kingsford Smith Drive intersection to left-in and left-out only. This will prevent right turns to and from Kingsford Smith Drive and allow duplication and lengthening of the right-turn lane from Kingsford Smith Drive onto the Gateway Motorway northbound on-ramp.
10. Closing existing median break between Violet Street and Schneider Road to maximise traffic flow and improve safety.
11. Closing the existing median break between Schneider Road and Harvey Street to allow duplication and lengthening of the right-turn queuing lanes from Kingsford Smith Drive to Schneider Road.
Harvey Street
12. Prohibiting right turns from Harvey Street to Kingsford Smith Drive, with the potential to stop right turns into Harvey Street in the future.
