Brisbane City Council has finalised the design for the Blunder Road upgrade project stages 6 and 7 to improve access and safety in the surrounding areas.
The upgrade is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Road Action Program, which tackles congestion and improves safety on Brisbane’s 21 worst congested roads.
Construction is scheduled to start mid March 2010 and is expected to be completed late 2011, weather permitting.
BACKGROUND
Blunder Road is the main north-south connection between Heathwood, Pallara, Doolandella and Durack with the Logan Motorway.
In recent years the area has experienced significant growth and is in need of an upgrade to handle increased traffic volumes, improve safety and meet future traffic demands.
Over the past 10 years, Stages 1 to 5 of Blunder Road upgrade have been gradually completed on the section of road from Ipswich Road to Crossacres Street. Stage 6 will realign Blunder Road with a four-lane road between Blunder Creek and Wadeville Street with the option for six lanes in the future. Stage 7 will upgrade the road between Blunder Creek and Crossacres Street to four lanes with an option for six in the future.
Stages 6 and 7 aim to:
-
reduce travel times
-
increase efficiency, particularly for freight
-
divert traffic from residential and recreational areas
-
reduce traffic congestion
-
increase public transport options.

Changes to Falkland Street
Part of the upgrade involves turning Falkland Street into a cul-de-sac where it meets the new Blunder Road alignment. Falkland Street will be closed between 111 to 131 Falkland Street and 110 to 130 Falkland Street from Monday 29 March 2010 permanently.
Change of access for the affected residents are as detailed below:
12 to 100 Falkland Street – access from existing Blunder Road
31 to 111 Falkland Street – access from existing Blunder Road
130 to 150 Falkland Street – access from Richie Road
131 to 151 Falkland Street – access from Richie Road
Work hours
Council will make every effort to minimise disruption to neighbouring properties and the surrounding community during construction.
Works will generally take place between 7am-5pm Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works will be required. Council will notify nearby residents prior to any out of hours works starting.
Construction impacts
The safety of road users, residents and construction personnel is Council’s top priority during construction. Efficient traffic flow will be maintained where possible, however it is anticipated that there will be traffic disruption and delays, lane closures, speed reductions, pedestrian access changes, and temporary service interruptions. .
Traffic management during construction will include:
-
on-site signage including electronic message boards
-
traffic controllers as required
-
traffic notifications including letters, advertisements in local newspapers and fortnightly construction updates
-
40km/h speed limits in construction zones.
Access to properties and connecting roads will be maintained throughout construction. Environmental impacts, including dust and noise, will be minimised as much as possible.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
To keep the community up to date, the project team will be distributing fortnightly construction updates. To register to receive these updates, please email roadactionprogram@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call the project information line on 1800 880 314 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
